Before you launch into a full blown SEO for your website you need to take a serious look at your keywords.
It is important to narrow down a list of specific keywords that are relevant to your topic. For example if you are selling math curriculum for homeschool children in the elementary grades your list may include the following keywords:
Homeschool math
Saxon math
Singapore math
In addition to your very specific keywords you will want a list of synonyms, plural versions of your keywords and spelling variations.
I personally like to use Nichebot for my keyword research. This program does all my research for me and gives me a very focused list of keywords, synonyms, plural versions and spelling variations. It also gives me stats on the keywords I am considering so I know if this will be a profitable market.
If you are wondering how to use Nichebot I have set up lessons on using Nichebot to your best advantage on my Passive Profit System. It is part of the overall program but the tutorial on Nichebot is extremely valuable if you want your websites to really bring in targeted traffic.

As part of your overall SEO plan for your website you need to track how many visitors each page of your site receives daily and which pages are the most popular.
After you have done your initial search engine optimization to your website is when you want to begin tracking. What you are looking for is how your search engine rankings change with your site optimization. You will then evaluate your ranking and determine why your ranking has improved for certain keywords and then transfer this knowledge to increase your rankings on all your keywords.
There are two different areas you should track. The first is page views. You will use page views as apposed to “hits” because hits are a reflection of everything including image files. Page views shows how many times each page on your website has been viewed.
The second area to track is the most popular pages of your website and the search keywords that surfers are using to find your website. This information will allow you to duplicate the success of these pages on other pages of your website.
You can pay to review your website rankings or you can use a free service such as StatCounter.com. With a service like StatCounter you will be able to have on your website an Invisible Counter Option for; Popular Pages, Entry Pages, Exit Pages as well as Keyword Analysis and Visitor Paths.
